two people in the lab

Getting Started

This learning module will introduce you to the learning cycle used in this course. There are twelve learning cycles which concentrate on specific aspects of chemistry in CHEM 11. They are designed around the specific chapters in your text for convenience. Each contain team ChemActivities from your POGIL workbook, reading assignments, www.CCCConfer.org lectures either live or archived, homework, lab work, and assessments. The learning module approach will keep you on track. Lets get started . . .

DNA icon Discovery and/or Exploration

Do not consider this homework. Homework is from the reading text and can be done on your own. The discovery activities are group work.

You will be using your POGIL Work Book

You will be using your POGIL workbook for the discovery part of the course. Work through the Group ChemActivity while creating a Wiki in your assigned groups. Each ChemActivity is graded based on your personal participation in the group Wiki project. You must create three specific sections within the Wiki based on questions in the CA, and add two additional comments for full credit. The first person to arrive in the group area will create the page for the group. Everyone else will just add to it. Only those in your group can edit what you are writing. But, everyone in the class can read what you are writing.

Use the comment area to make notes about learning experiences. Comment areas cannot be edited by anyone. This may be where you make your two additional "add to" posts if you wish. If you made errors and then corrected them, place these ideas in the comments area. If you really liked one aspect of the project, note that in the comments area as well. I will add comments when needed for guidance.

For today's discovery activity you will be learning how to post to your group's Wiki. Just have fun with it while learning the ropes.

open book icon Reading

Reading material which helps to concentrate your studies and add to your experiences from the exploration will be assigned. Your text chapters match the learning module titles and will be a main source of reading. A written reflection on the reading will be required for each chapter reading. Web links may also be added. In some cases, a self assessment which is not graded will be given here so you can evaluate where you need more work.

For live classes, you can be present online facilitated through www.CCCConfer.org on Mondays from 10 AM to Noon.

Archived videos do not require a code and are available on the syllabus page after the lecture has finished. Turn off pop up blockers!

Homework assignments will be placed in here. Chapter questions, additional worksheets, or other assignments will show up here.

Homework assignments are to be done in ink in a "homework notebook." You must get accustomed to writing the question and the answer in ink. You will be scanning your work and turning it in through the assignment area. Get help this week on how to do this in the Information Technology Center (ITC) located on the main level of the library near the bathrooms. Drawing molecules is an important aspect of the class.

Note: An assessment which randomly selects a few of the problems will be given if I see the need to assess you work rather than look at it. You may use your notebook during the assessment. It will be timed so have your work done in your notebook before you begin the assessment.

Laboratory work gives you experiences which allow you to connect lecture concepts with the real world. The lab work which goes with this learning module is orientation material and introductory lab work.

atom icon Performance Assessment

This will be the final evaluation of your learning. Taking the assessment is graded. This page will give you instructions about each assessment (yes there may be more than one) so make sure you follow the instructions specifically. The assessments will have questions which come from all aspects of the learning module unless specified differently. Some will be timed. Others will be "take as long as you want" but all will be "one chance" and that's it. Make sure before you begin, you are ready for some uninterrupted time!
