Carbons ability to form long chains of atoms covalently bonded together along with its ability to covalently bond with most everything on the periodic table makes it the ideal candidate to be the atom of life ... the atom of complexity. This learning module will touch on the aspects of organic molecule classifications which allow chemists to study the diverse complexity of organic molecules. The concept of functional groups will be introduced. It is the most important aspect of organic chemistry.
In CHEM 11, we go through a number of functional groups and look at their chemical and physical properties. This is a lead into biochemistry. You will build on you knowledge of Lewis strucutres to visualize molecules and their reactions.
