Our last look at organic chemistry is our final link into biochemistry. Fatty acids, Fats and oils, and protein chemistry will all be related to this chapter. The ease of conversion between each of these final functional groups using a acid catalyst is also how our enzymes do the conversion with our bodies. Remember to connect + to - as you make new bonds and removing water or adding water as you go either makes or breaks these functional groups.
OrientationThe acid functional group has a carbonyl and an OH on the same carbon. Combining an acid with an alcohol while removing water affords an ester. Combining an acid with an amine while removing water affords an amide.
