The study of nucleic acids involves sugar glycoside like chemistry, phosphodiester chemistry, nitrogen amine basicity, and hydrogen bonding concepts. As we progress, it is important to draw on parallel aspects from the study sugars, proteins, and phospholipids. The section about glycosidic bonds which have a nitrogen, sulfur , or carbon in the middle of this page is a good start: WikiPedia Link
