This learning module will introduce you to the learning cycle used in this course. There are twelve learning cycles which concentrate on specific aspects of chemistry in CHEM 1A. They are designed around the specific chapters in your text book for convenience. Each contain team ChemActivities given to you in PDF formate, reading assignments, www.CCCConfer.org lectures either live or taped, homework, and assessments. The learning module approach will keep you on track. Lets get started . . .
The Orientation section sets the tone for the learning module and outlines the following:

You will be using your PDF POGIL exercises for the discovery part of the course. Work through the Team ChemActivity while discussing specific concepts within a wiki in your assigned groups. Each Team ChemActivity is graded based on your participation in the group. Only those in your group can edit the wiki. But, everyone inthe class can see what you are writing. Wiki work is due by Thursday morning each week. Get organized and spread out the work amoung all group members. There is a discussion/organization wiki page for that purpose.
Once your have completed the Team ChemActivity as a group, your leader must post a synopsis of the significant learning that occurred for the whole class on the discussion board. Rotate leadership each time so everyone gets practice with writing summaries. A summary of answers in not needed as the wiki is visable. Write about what was tricky, how you overcame difficulties, or what worked well within the group. Just posting the answers is not what I mean here. These are to be written as learning guides about the ideas... They are graded. You must be a leader four times during the semester to eanr full points in this area. If by chance you get a fifth option, I will drop your lowest score in this area.
For this discovery today you will be learning how to post within your wiki as a class, post within a wiki in a group, assign a leader, have the team leader post on the TCA Leader Synopsis discussion board, and turning in a PDF or MS Word file in the drop box within blackboard. Just have fun with it! No grades this week.

Reading material which helps to concentrate your studies and add to your experiences from the exploration will be assigned. Your text chapters match the learning module titles and will be a main source of reading. Web links may also be added. In some cases, a self assessment which is not graded will be given here so you can evaluate where you need more work.

The lectures will be facilitated through www.CCCConfer.org. You will have codes you can use to get into the live lecture each week. If you miss a lecture, come back to the lectures page and a link to the recorded version will be available. I also have links to past lectures if you want to watch them before the live event. TechnicalRequirements for CCCConfer. Also needed is updated JAVA. Even though you can attend live from home or just go through the lectures when convenient for you by participating through the archived lectures, some opportunities will be available to attend in the Redbud 8 classroom. A schedule of Live lectures will be posted soon.

Homework assignments will be placed in here. Chapter questions, additional worksheets, or other assignments will show up here.
Homework assignments are to be done in ink in a notebook. You must get accustomed to writing the question and the answer in ink. An assessment which randomly selects a few of the problems is given when you are ready. You may use your notebook during the assessment. It will be timed so have your work done in your notebook before you begin the assessment.

Laboratory work gives you experiences which allow you to connect lecture concepts with the real world.

This will be the final evaluation of your learning. Taking the assessment is graded. This page will give you instructions about each assessment (yes there may be more than one) so make sure you follow the instructions specifically. The assessments will have questions which come from all aspects of the learning module unless specified differently. Some will be timed. Others will be "take as long as you want" but all will be "one chance" and that's it. Make sure before you begin, you are ready for some uninterrupted time!
