I am sure you remember as a kid eating a mud pie or ending up with dirt where you would rather not say. What is in dirt? Why does it exist the way it does? What kinds of chemistry can we learn from dirt anyway? These questions are answered while delving into how we organize the study of dirt and its many components. Now we are getting down and dirty with chemistry!
Now that you have made it through an overview of science, matter, some terminology, and some basic math operations, you are ready to begin classifying things you study. This chapter begins this classification process by looking at dirt and its components. Have a periodic table handy. You are going to be using it.

The group work for this week focuses on numbers, units, the metric system and converting measurements in one unit into another. You are required to divide up the work and create a wiki page for each activity. Your group should assign a different leader for each activity. It is better to post thought process rather than just an answer. Enjoy.

Chapter two of your text.
Post Reflection in the chapter discussion area as part of your learning.
The text uses soil as a backdrop for introducing many aspects of chemistry. Bonding between atoms or groups of atoms may be covalent or ionic for example. Minerals are in soil. Minerals are naturally occurring substances which are substantially pure and have a regular array of the same atom(s) or ions within them. It is important to know what form the atom takes within systems to begin to understand the chemistry. Sodium the element vs. sodium the ion are very different.

The archived lecture is available. The lecture will focus on the ideas of minerals and dirt. Elements found in their natural state on earth and everything else that is found as ions.
After going through the lecture, post your reflection about the learning in the lecture discussion area. Post two replies as well.

Download this Ch20 Module 2 Homework (PDF) and work through these problems.
After you are finished do the Dt_Homework Assessment
Write the question and the answer to each of the following in you homework notebook. Showing your thought process will help you for study later.
Pages 77 to 81; #6, 10, 18, 20, 22, 24, 32, 34, 40, 44 - These are for the final assessment for the learning module.
